Multiple Intelligences is
Howard Gardner’s psychological theory about people and their different types of
intelligences. It is a new understanding about individual learning styles and
types of intelligence and it is changing the structure of early childhood
education and formal schooling. Howard Gardner believes that “intelligence is a
series of distinct abilities or talents rather than a general capacity and that
the key question is, how are you smart, rather
than how smart are you” (Shipley, 2008, p. 13). Gardner previously
identified seven distinct intelligences: visual-spatial, bodily-kinesthetic,
musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic and logical -mathematical,
but recently, an eighth intelligence has been added to Gardner's list which is
naturalistic intelligence.
Being aware of the different intelligences and learning styles is critical for educators and parents to understand in order for children to be successful. Educators need to be sure that lessons, activities, materials and the overall classroom environment caters to all the different learning needs and learning styles of all students. This will ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed in what they are good at and build on the things they need to improve on.
